Department of Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry was started with the objective of promoting better psychiatric care for the patients in the hospital. It was also necessary to impart psychiatric training among the undergraduate medical students for which an organized Department of Psychiatry was a pre-requisite. It was also felt that more research work needed to be carried out in this field of medicine to promote positive mental health among people.
Over the years, expansion of this department’s activities has helped to train postgraduate students in general medicine, community medicine and paediatrics. Besides the postgraduate students of M.D. Psychiatry and D.P.M. courses, students from various paramedical courses such as clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, pharmacology and speech and hearing are also benefitted from this department. Faculty members have published papers and indexed national and international journals. Psychology section of the department provides regular counselling to students and patients apart from conducting research and camps.
